One of the more popular case styles from Speck has been their CandyShell, a case which aims to meet the criteria for those looking for a nice mix of style and protection. Read on for our comprehensive Speck CandyShell case review for iPhone 5.
The interior of the Speck CandyShell is comprised of a soft silicone TPU material. Where the back of the iPhone 5 rests, bubbles allow for air, which should help with shock absorption should you drop your iPhone 5. The interior has TPU that acts as protection for the sides of the iPhone on impact. The rubberized material extends out on each of the four corners to partner with a hard plastic shell. These two materials work in unison to provide a high level of protection.
Installation of the Speck CandyShell takes seconds. You slip in the iPhone into the side without any buttons and then using two hands use your index fingers to push the iPhone down and in. The case construction is solid and you can expect the fit to be the same. There is a lip around the bezel of the display, so you can lay your iPhone 5 face down and not have the display exposed to surfaces.
At the top and bottom of the display, the rubber bezel bows in slightly, which is done intentionally to help keep the iPhone 5 in place. Speck has done a fantastic job with fit and you’ll have no concerns about the iPhone 5 dislodging, even if you should drop your iPhone.
Nowhere could I find any gaps between the rubberized material and the screen. This kind of fit is what you’d expect from a recognized case manufacturer and they certainly deliver.
The polycarbonate hard outer shell feels good to the touch, which is probably a reason for their success with this line of cases. The sides are slightly curved, which add to the size and ultimately detract a bit from the design of the iPhone 5 and it’s sharp lines. With the case installed, it starts to have curves, instead of the boxy look. At the bottom, there are small holes cut for speaker and microphone. While intended for functionality, the off-shot is that it looks creates a nice look.
The Speck CandyShell for iPhone 5 has ports exposed for your headphone jack, Lightning cable, mute switch. You will not be able to utilize a 30-pin to Lightning connector with this case. Despite the two levels of protection, the mute switch is accessible without any difficulty. While this may seem like common sense, I’ve used a number of cases which make it a chore to use this switch.
On the CandyShell, the volume up/down buttons as well as the power button use soft touch silicone to interface with the actual buttons on the iPhone 5. Probably one of the best features of this case is how easy it is to utilize these buttons, one of the best I’ve used in that area, even toping the SwitchEasy Tones. Of course the camera is cut-out, so no issues with taking images with the case on.
Speck offers a number of colors, all of which are glossy. The black case we tested show significant fingerprints. Over time the case started to exhibit excessive scratches. Considering the care I take with my iPhone 5, I’d surmise that it’s relatively easy to scratch this case.
Most people case their iPhones, so they don’t have to be overly careful with their device. You can certainly do that with the Speck, without anything adversely affecting your iPhone, but don’t expect the case to retain the same shine as when you first purchased it.
