Earlier this year, it was rumored that AT&T would charge users to take advantage of the upcoming FaceTime Over Cellular. AT&T declined to comment, and Sprint said it’d be free on their service. Now AT&T has released an official statement, and it looks like you won’t have to pay — but you will need a new contract. That’s right, FaceTime Over Cellular on AT&T will only work with their Mobile Share data plans. So no using your grandfathered data plan.
The official statement is:
AT&T will offer FaceTime over Cellular as an added benefit of our new Mobile Share data plans, which were created to meet customers’ growing data needs at a great value. With Mobile Share, the more data you use, the more you save. FaceTime will continue to be available over Wi-Fi for all our customers.
While at least slightly better than AT&T charging outright, it does put pressure on users to change over to the new Mobile Share plans, and abandon their old ones.
Ah well, there’s always Wi-Fi.
