A report tonight from the Wall Street Journal indicates that Apple’s new iPhone 5 will support 4G LTE around the world, according to “people familiar with the matter”. This confirmation comes as a surprise to no one really, considering the recent push by wireless providers to move customers to 4G LTE. Earlier this year, the new iPad (third generation) included support for 4G LTE.
With Apple’s yearly iPhone upgrade due next week, it would be surprising if it weren’t part of the new feature set. The new iPhone is expected to feature a new 4-inch display that is taller, but not wider and will feature in-cell touch panels. In the US, both Verizon and AT&T have been aggressive with their LTE rollout. Sprint appears to be lagging behind with their rollout. According to IDC, Verizon’s 4G LTE network is the largest. It’s unclear how this will affect countries who aren’t ready to support LTE packed into the new iPhone. This should all become clear on Wednesday, when Apple officially introduces the new iPhone.
