Apple has pulled the plug on an iOS WikiLeaks app, which allowed you to browse the leaked documents the site is so famous for. According to TechCrunch the $1.99 app is no longer available for download. Without further comment from Apple or the developer, we still don’t know why the app was pulled, but there are a number of theories. Everyone is screaming censorship, which may or may not be the truth, but we’re trying to figure out if there’s at least a veneer of reason behind this.
One theory is that since half of the profits the app made were going straight to WikiLeaks, this breaks the iOS rule about gathering money for charity, which isn’t allowed. There’s also the suggestion that since Apple takes a 30% cut of sales, they would effectively be making a profit from classified content, which may be illegal.
To call the situation murky would be an understatement.
UPDATE: Here’s Apple’s explanation:
“We removed WikiLeaks because it violated developer guidelines. An app must comply with all local laws. It may not put an individual or target group in harms way.”
exactly what fucking law did they break? Last i checked the first amendment applied to them as well.
Why did Apple approve it in the first place if that was the reason? I think the real reason was because our Government applied pressure for Apple to remove the app , the same pressure they applied on Mastercard/Visa, PayPal, Amazon, etc.
I agree.
To the first post. Read the whole amendment .
The Supreme Court has also recognized that the government may prohibit some speech that may cause a breach of the peace or cause violence.
And they all rdy been abuse of causing CIA and military. Unrest.
Just wanted to put that out there
