What The Hell Is x.Mac.MarketingName?

Over the last few hours, a number of blogs have spotted something bizzarre in the app store: a supported device called x.Mac.MarketingName, a placeholder text in the app store which seems to hint at a new iOS platform. These apps already run on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, so what’s left?

Here are the top candidates in my mind:

  • Mac OS X Lion: the fact that it’s x.Mac.MarketingName seems to suggest that maybe we’ll see certain apps are able to run on your Mac as well as on iOS — which means you won’t have to buy the same app multiple times on multiple platforms.
  • Apple TV: another big one. We know it runs a heavily modified iOS, so this might be the introduction of apps for the plaftform.
  • iPod Nano: Nano apps for a nano machine.

Or it could just be some sort of codefart, and not mean anything. What do you think?

Code Fart perhaps? :P Just a guess

I’m certain when you select which devices your app is compatible with and submit to the AppStore, it doesn’t submit as a literal string. It submits as a list that iTunes and the AppStore app parse generating a readable string on the fly. A simple and efficient way to insert custom text without having to change anything. :) Perhaps this is run directly from Apple’s web servers and something got dorked in there adding an addition device to a list that doesn’t actually exist thereby defaulting to the variable name?

Sounds pretty good eh? I haven’t had enough coffee this morning yet. LOL ;)
