So just over a month ago our friends at OtterBox took a huge step and released something that isn’t quite tough enough to protect your iPhone 3G from getting rolled over by a car, hit by a truck, or dumped into a raging river - but tough enough to protect your iPhone from life’s daily battles and still look and feel great doing it. OtterBox is known for tough. They aren’t known for smexy, they aren’t known for girly, they sure as heck aren’t known for making cases that include anything that might resemble stylish. So naturally I was a bit surprised when they announced the Impact series. I mean come on - something that promises to not be just as thick as your iPhone, soft, and yet still tough enough to bear the OtterBox name? Alright, so pretty much everyone knows that Apple is now allowing Developers to issue codes for the iTunes store and that those codes allow developers to basically give away their application to reviewers or even better - users.
So, realistically this post isn’t so much for our readers (yet) it’s to let all the iPhone/Touch devs out there know that we’re more than happy to work with you on getting an application reviewed - or even better giving away a few codes to the readers. Nothing sells a product better than word of mouth especially as the store gets more and more crowded.

Amazon has just released an App that provides much of the Web experience of Amazon.com along with what looks to be a pretty neat feature - Amazon Remembers.
That’s right, while some of you were sleeping last night one of the most anticipated games of the season hit the app store. Unfortunately I found out a few minutes before I went to bed so I only had time to play through the first training level, but let me tell you - so far the game definitely looks incredible and looks like its going to be a lot of fun. I’ve attached a couple screenshots from my iPhone below -
So, Gameloft - can I please get some Counter-Strike on my iPhone soon?!

If you haven’t heard of JAVOedge yet - well you haven’t been hanging around here very long - because we’ve covered JAVOedge extensively over the past couple years here on JAiB and JAMM. (Just check the search, you’ll see.)

Now that Best Buy is selling the iPhone, it would appear that all is not quite so rosy for the consumer, who should be benefiting from the increased sales competition. Apparently, Best Buy is counting on new iPhone customers not to do any price comparisons, because they are selling the iPhone 3G Dock for a good $20.00 more than Apple itself charges.
Ok - Seriously, if you didn’t know this yet - you’re either waaaay busier than I am, or this is the only blog you read. Either way I’m sorry but I’ve no great insights for you into this particular event. I’ve been too busy to even really dig into the new firmware (short of getting it installed) and since I’m on a new MacBook “pwning” my phone is currently not possible anyway. So, rather than waste your time with my haven’t touched it yet thoughts - here’s some links to folks in the know:
OK, so it’s obviously not true, but that’s what it feels like. The 2.2 update has vastly improved the performance of not just the core OS of the iPhone but of all of the installed apps, both native and from the App Store. The AP News app, for example, used to take 10-20 seconds to refresh a news category - now it takes 2-4. Even apps that took an eternity to load (Such as X-Plane) now load substantially and remarkably faster. The stability is greatly improved thus far as well - X-Plane used to require a reboot immediately before play unless you wanted it to crash within 60 seconds or so. That appears to be no longer the case. In fact, with the exception of Safari crashing once, I haven’t had ANY app crashes yet; I would have expected a few by now prior to the update.
Given that Apple obviously did a lot of work to Safari in the 2.2 update, it is surprising to see that one of the biggest 2.1 bugs did not get fixed: Links to applications in the App Store still do not work, giving an error instead of opening the App Store program.
The other 2.1 bug that hasn’t been fixed: Safari still does not honor META REFRESH tags, meaning that redirecting users from one web page to another still does not work.
As an update to our report that AT&T’s hotspots were now open to iPhone users, I did have the opportunity to try it out recently on a trip and am pleased to report that it works pretty well. Once connected, you are redirected in Safari to a page that asks for your phone number. An SMS is then sent to your phone with a link that, when clicked, grants you 24 hours worth of access.
My one quibble? There is a pretty quick inactivity timeout — so if you stop accessing the hotspot for more than a few minutes (say, to take a phone call - and Exchange Sync apparently is not enough activity), you will be forced to click that SMS link again to regain access. It’s not a show-stopper per se, but it could be avoided. I ran into the issue multiple times over a short (1 hour) stay.
I have coded fairly extensively with Symbian, Windows Mobile, and Blackberry. iPhone just blows them away, making me wonder who decided that mobile development had to be difficult. — Tom Yager, InfoWorld
