Verizon's support was absolutely useless about it, but I found that Apple Mail had turned ON SSL in the Advanced settings for incoming mail. I did need password authentication, but once I turned off the SSL box, everything worked just fine." MacInTouch 11:34 AM
  • "The thing to remember is that the iTunes Music folder (the one containing the actual music) doesn't contain the iTunes library data files. In a standard setup, your library files are located in ~/Music/iTunes, while the music is in ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music. If you open up iTunes, go to preferences, hit the Advanced tab, there's an option to change the location of the iTunes Music folder. This can be done easily and through the interface, but leaves the library files (which contain the list of songs, playlists, etc) in your home folder. You can then take the library files and copy them for your other users (on this or other computers). Just make sure they get pointed to the correct iTunes Music folder as well and it should work." MacInTouch 11:40 AM
  • "Like others here, I have a multi-tier backup strategy: Time Machine to a local NAS (hourly), CrashPlan to CrashPlan Central (off-site, nightly), and SuperDuper bootable images (weekly). In particular, I like CrashPlan a lot. It's competitive with Mozy and S3/JungleDisk, in features and monthly pricing. And it offers some additional benefits/features that the others don't have, notably the ability to back up to your friends' systems for free (your backups are encrypted and inaccessible, except to you), and soon it will back up to external disks, ala Retrospect and other dedicated local backup tools." MacInTouch 11:44 AM
  • "I'm answering my own question here. By *accident* I went into iCal Preferences *again*. And in the Advanced pane, toggled the Turn On Time Zone Support OFF then back ON. *That*, unbelievably, corrected all this time-shifting business, and all is well now on both the iMac and my iPhone. Sheesh!" MacInTouch 11:39 AM
