While there have been a steady stream of new channels available on the Apple TV and new content promised with the 4th generation coming later this year, we’ve yet to see an Amazon Instant channel. Apple offers TV and movie rentals and purchases through the iTunes Store, so they might not be in any rush to offer a channel that offers competitive products. It looks less likely with news that Amazon is preparing their own set-top box. For those who have an Amazon Prime membership, you can stream thousands of movies and TV shows. Great if you have a ROKU, but what about the Apple TV? Here’s how to watch Amazon Instant and Prime videos on Apple TV.
In order to play videos from Amazon Instant on your Apple TV, you’ll first need to download the free app from the App Store. The latest release supports Apple’s AirPlay feature that allows you to stream content wirelessly from your iOS device to your Apple TV.
Open the app and find the TV show or movie you’d like to watch. If you are a Prime customer, your account will need to be authorized. At the bottom right corner of the playback window is an arrow. Tap on the arrow and you’ll have an option to select the Apple TV.
Note: Both your iOS device and Apple TV must be on the same wireless network.
Volume is controlled from your television. The controls at the top of your iPhone or iPad can be used to rewind or fast forward. You can also pause your program.
I recently subscribed to Amazon Prime. Initially I thought the $79 yearly fee would easily be offset by the free and fast 2-day shipping that comes with your membership. As it turned out, I use Amazon Prime just as much as Netflix, if not more. Exclusive programs like Justified and The Good Wife have easily justified the cost. While it would be fantastic if Apple added the Amazon Instant channel, using my iPhone and AirPlay has been a flawless alternative.
