Yesterday we mentioned that Best Buy had reduced the price of the iPhone 5c to $50, after issuing a $50 gift card which could then be used to cut the price in half. Previously, we had seen both Walmart and Target offer price cuts out of the gate, with iPhone 5c pricing at just $79 (with a new contract). Things got more interesting today, with a bit of a price war breaking out. Radio Shack has matched Best Buy’s offer, also providing a $50 gift card with purchase and a new contract. Walmart, known for having the best prices on pretty much everything, have cut their price to $45. This is what Walmart does, they are in the business of offering the best prices, so the price cut is not surprising. It most definitely appears as if this is in response to Best Buy’s price cut.
Best Buy’s offer runs throughout the October 7th, but at this rate, it wouldn’t be surprising to see this extended. Walmart has plans to keep the pricing through the holiday season.
The race to the bottom continues. It seems as if it’s just a matter of time before the iPhone 5c is free on contract. The discounting hasn’t made its way to either the wireless carriers or Apple, all of whom are still selling the new iPhone at $99 on-contract.
For all the discounting on the iPhone 5c, there hasn’t been much at all on the iPhone 5s. Walmart cuts $10 off the $199 retail price, but with supplies limited, it’ll be difficult to find one. Apple themselves are unable to keep up with demand. As of tonight, all colors and carriers show a vague October ship date. Their online store allows you to check locally for pickup options. A quick check of the NY area shows limited stock, with only Space Gray available.
The iPhone 5c is slowly becoming the ‘cheap’ iPhone that everyone demanded. The phone itself is everything but cheap, but at $45 (with a new 2-year contract), you’d be hard-pressed to find anything on par at that price.
