Canada is getting the unlocked iPhone 4, but it’s not coming cheap. If you want to buy the phone directly from Apple, bypassing any carrier, the 16GB version will cost $659 of your Canadian collars, and 32GB will be $779. Ouch.
Sure, you’ll be able to throw in SIM into the device, and have it work on just about any network, but in the world of carrier subsidies, it’s easy to forget just how much a brand new phone can cost, without a network absorbing some of price. That said, you’re not stuck paying an insane monthly bill either, so it might just even out over the long run.

Hey. Nice that you put the jail breaking article before the unlocked article. Unlocked by Apple is the best way to go. No voiding of warranty, no two year link to a particular cell company. In the end, we pay through the subsidy for the phone over the 2 year contract that we’ve been locked into.
Apple knows also, that each cell provider in Canada has GSM capabilities now. Are they thinking to open the iPhone in the future to all of them? Thereby, cornering the market, so that everyone can choose it over the Andriods?
