United Airlines will rollout a unique in-flight movie streaming service as early as April, according to a new report from Patently Apple. The movie service will be exclusive to iOS devices and enable customers to watch movies and TV shows for free. The new system will effectively replace antiquated systems and will be available on a select number of planes.
United has aggressive upgrade plans, with expectations of making the new in-flight movie service available on most domestic aircraft by the end of 2014. The process of watching a movie or TV show will require the passenger download the free United app from the App Store. This can be done prior to travel or by accessing in-flight WiFi. Downloading the United app using WiFi can be done at no extra charge. Access to WiFi for other content will still require additional charges.
The app will allow you to stream movies and TV shows for a selection of up to 200 programs. Details have yet to be provided on whether the freshness of the content.
The United app was recently updated with a new iOS 7 design. It provides access to flight status, Passbook compatible boarding passes, ability to check-in and more. Come April, this app will become a personal entertainment system. The new movie service will be available on laptops, providing they have a necessary browser plugin. Mobile access, for now, is exclusive to iOS.
