The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has approved a universal charger, in the wake of their decision to push a universal charging standard via microUSB. Apple signed on to this accord in June, as did Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, LG, NEC, Qualcomm, RIM, and Samsung. The device will charge any phone that uses the microUSB standard that the UN organization called for. While at this juncture, it seems that Apple will only be providing a microUSB adaptor, rather than changing dock connecter, standardization of this type ultimately leads to fewer cables, less waste, and much easier transitioning when you buy a new handset.
