It might only be an incremental update in version numbers, but Tumblr v3.2.3 packs a major missing feature — iPad support. That’s right, after months and months of waiting, there’s finally a native Tumblr app, and it does some fantastic things with the iPad’s larger screen.

There’s a persistant navigation sidebar at all times, as well as a crazy new radial menu for when you want to post content (rather than just see what everyone else is doing). The Verge asked why it took so long to get a tablet version of the app:

The app only took a few weeks to create, Irace says, but that’s thanks to the months Tumblr already spent this summer updating its iPhone app to native iOS code. “Once we had all those building blocks in place, we were ready to go for iPad,” developer Bryan Irace says. “It hasn’t been something that fell on deaf ears. All of us at Tumblr really wanted it too.”

It’s nice to see a native app, as running Tumblr as a web-app on the iPad has never been particularly good. With such a visual-centric website, pasting it on a tablet screen is a must.
