By far, the stand out feature of the iOS 6 announcement was the new Maps app (even though city dwellers like myself are unimpressed by the loss of public transport and walking directions), but we’re left wondering what’s powering this new tool. It turns out that the extremely popular GPS makers TomTom are the ones behind the scenes, as the company has announced, and you can see in the Engadget screens above.TomTom’s involvement may prove useful as they have a huge amount of experience in the GPS arena.
Unfortunately, it appears the new turn-by-turn navigation and flyover features will only work on newer devices, and you’ll need an iPad 2, or iPhone 4S or better to take advantage.
