We were shocked to hear recently that development on the Apple TV 3 jailbreak might have stalled. Thankfully, it looks like work might be going forward, but at a slow pace. 9to5Mac have reached out to a number of jailbreakers, and received some good news.

We have learned that a jailbreak for the third-generation Apple TV is indeed in the works from someone with close knowledge of the project. There are just a handful people working on the jailbreak, and while it’s not yet complete, at least one method to jailbreaking is currently being chased in hopes of big results.
James Abeler of FireCore confirmed to them that there is a team working on the jailbreak, and that as soon as it lands, FireCore will be ready with their aTV Flash software.
This gives us a lot of hope for the future of the Apple TV, as getting a jailbreak on the 3rd generation means that the prices on the older 2nd generation will stop skyrocketing, and you’ll be able to properly display 1080 content. But with a small team working on it, and less interest than iOS proper, it’s not known how long it’ll be before the jailbreak will hit.
Who knows, there could be a 4th generation Apple TV before we’ve jailbroken the 3rd gen.
