Today’s absolutely bizarre rumor that seems to have swept the iPhone blogs is so bizarre, that you really have to wander why people are giving it the time of day. The rumor originates from China Times, and was translated by BrightWire. It claims that not only will Apple be producing the iPhone 5S this year (ok, sure) but also a 4.8-inch model called the “iPhone Math”, and a 12-megapixel iPhone at Christmas.
Now, 9to5Mac have done a noble thing, and actually explained why this rumor is totally illogical, but this whole thing really doesn’t even begin to make sense.
For starters, the iPhone Math is a horrible name, that is not something Apple would ever choose. Also, Apple only increased the size of the iPhone last year, a move that took significant planning and required app makers to update their apps to cash in on the bigger screen — do you really think they’d make an even bigger version so soon after the fact?
The jump between iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 was 0.5 inches, can you imagine adding another 0.8 inches on top of that? And what resolution/form factor would that even be?
And where does the 12-megapixel camera version of the iPhone fit in? Would Apple completely disrupt their update schedule for a relatively minor update like that? Not to mention that this whole shebang doesn’t even address the questions about the entry-level iPhone that have been swirling for the last few months.
Maybe come June I’ll have to eat my hat, as Apple unveils a huge and unwieldy 4.8-inch iPhone Math. But until I see it, I don’t buy it.
