The newest iPhone has been officially announced by Steve Jobs at WWDC — and it’s the iPhone 4. There will be “hundreds of new features”, of which Steve will discuss eight.
Steve Jobs stared by discussing the success of the iPhone on todays market — citing a recent study that showed the phone had 28% of the market, compared to Android’s 9%. 58.2% of mobile internet browsers use the iPhone, 2.5x that of Android.
The new features:
Design:
- Glass front and back, with stainless steel rim.
- “Really thin”. 9.3mm thick, 24% thinner than current iPhone, thinnest smartphone on the market.
- Noise cancellation microphone
- Uses the stainless steel band around the phone as part of the antenna, which is why the lines seen on the outside of the phone
- Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, UMTS, GSM
- Apparently the glass is extremely flexible and strong — hopefully no more shattered screens! Apple says it’s 30x harder than plastic.
Retina Display:
- New display, 4x the density of before
- 326 ppi, 960×640, 3.5″ — which fits what we saw here.
- Text should look like a “fine printed book”, as our eyes max out at 300ppi at 10-12 inches.
- Jobs attempted to compare the NYT between the two phones, but network troubles prevented that.
- 800:1 contrast ratio, IPS technology for color and wide viewing angle.”You can’t make an OLED display with this kind of resolution right now.”
- 78% of the pixels in an iPad
- Apps automatically render text and controls in higher resolution without developer work
- “You can’t make an OLED display with this kind of resolution right now.” Steve thinks will set standard for next 7 years.
- You can watch a video of the improvement here.
