The Data Usage Of 3G FaceTime

If you’re thinking about jailbreaking your iPhone in order to get FaceTime working over 3G, you’re probably wondering how much data you’ll burn through by doing so. After all, two way video communication can be pretty bandwidth heavy.

9to5Mac got two iPhone 4s, and ran FaceTime over the 3G network, and figured out just how much of AT&T’s precious data you’ll be using to do so. Their 5 minute conversation used up 14.7MB, so around 3MB per minute.

After just an hour of talking for a month, you’ll have just about killed your 200MB data plan if you use this technique. Maybe it’s a good idea to keep it just over Wi-Fi unless you’re on unlimited.
