NYT Agrees, Verizon iPhone in Early 2011, Verizon Gets Simultaneous Voice and Data

The New York Times has confirmed what the WSJ reported earlier this week, that a Verizon compatible iPhone will be launching early next year: After more than three years of using only AT&T cellphone networks, Apple is now making a version of the iPhone 4 for Verizon’s network, according to a person who is in direct contact with Apple. Apple and Verizon will begin selling the phone early next year, said the person, who agreed to speak on condition of anonymity because the plans were supposed to be confidential and he did not want to alienate his contacts at Apple. And then, as if on queue, Verizon appears to be getting an upgrade to their network that will allow simultaneous voice and data connections, one of the advantages of … [Read more...]

WSJ Tweaks Article To Make Verizon iPhone a Certainty

Yesterday, the WSJ posted a claim that Apple was making a CDMA iPhone, which caused all sorts of discussion and consternation across the internet. They've since tweaked the wording, to make it clear that Verizon definitely will be carrying the phone. It went from this:Apple Inc. plans to begin mass producing a new iPhone by the end of 2010 that would allow Verizon Wireless to sell the smartphone early next year, said people briefed by Apple. To this: AT&T Inc. is about to lose its lock on the iPhone. Apple Inc. is making a version of its iPhone that Verizon Wireless will sell early next year, according to people familiar with the matter, ending an exclusive deal with AT&T and sharpening the competition with Google Inc.-based … [Read more...]

Analyst Eightball: Verizon and Apple Negotiating Over New iPhone

Kaufman Bros.'s Shaw Wu sent a note to clients today stating that they believe Apple and Verizon are in talks over a CDMA iPhone, and that T-Mobile and Sprint may be in the works: From our checks with industry and supply chain sources and a recent SEC 10-Q filing by AT&T mentioning that exclusivity with "a number of attractive handsets" could end, we have conviction that the iPhone could likely finally be at another carrier besides AT&T here in the U.S. in 2011 and potentially at Verizon in 2011 or 2012... We believe the argument for AAPL to pursue Verizon sooner than later is to address the growing presence of Android. What better way to do that than where Android has seen the majority of its success? From our … [Read more...]

Apple Buying Up CDMA Chips For Verizon iPhone?

Once more on the merry-go-round, friends and readers. This morning TechCrunch posted a news story with the following title: "Why The Verizon iPhone Rumors are True—CDMA iPhone Due in January." Oh man, that's some sweet link baiting, that is.They're going on the record as saying that the Verizon iPhone will be launched in January, based on reports of Apple buying up Qualcomm CDMA chips:Sources with knowledge of this entire situation have assured me that Apple has submitted orders for millions of units of Qualcomm CDMA chipsets for a Verizon iPhone run due in December. This production run would likely be for a January launch, and I’d bet the phone is nearly 100% consistent with the current iPhone 4 (with a fixed internal insulator on … [Read more...]

Verizon’s Droid X “Hold Any Way You Like” Ad Slams iPhone 4

Screen shot 2010-06-30 at 2.41.56 PM

Verizon today took out a full page ad today in the NY Times touting it's soon-to-be released Droid X that's coming July 15th. The ad provides an overview of the various specifications of the Droid X, but if you look closely there's some clear last minute copyrighting at work here. If you look at the photo of the Droid X, there isn't one mention of it's "double antenna design". Despite it not being important enough to be mentioned amongst the roughly 8-10 features, it's highlighted in the sparce copy below the image. "And most importantly, it comes with a double antenna design. The kind that allows you to hold the phone any way you like and use it just about anywhere to make crystal clear calls."Apple has yet to get a handle on the … [Read more...]

Rumor: Verizon iPhone To Handle Simultaneous Voice And Data

According to a source at BGR, when the Verizon iPhone lands, it won't be LTE. Instead, Verizon is testing something new: VoRA or Voice Over Rev. A. From what I gather, this means it would be able to handle both data and voice at once, a major complaint against the network. The new technology and iPhone would be released to coincide. One of our Verizon guys hit us up with some pretty interesting news. We have been told that when the mythical Verizon iPhone materializes, assuming it’s not a LTE unit, it might launch with VoRA; Voice over Rev. A. According to our source, Verizon has been testing VoRA as a precursor to VoLTE, and as long as the network upgrade timeline and iPhone release are aligned, we should see this happen. If it … [Read more...]

DroidDoes Astroturfing?

Over the weekend, Verizon and Motorola launched a new advertising campaign that directly attacks the iPhone. The  music in the commercial could easily be mistaken for an Apple campaign and then scrolls a list that basically attacks the iPhone. "iDon't have a real keyboard" and others read like a bullet list for Verizon sales reps who have been dealing with customers leaving for the iPhone. The campaign itself has created some buzz and Motorola's Droid that will be available on Verizon certainly appears to be the best Android phone to date and possibly a phone that might generate some interest. I'm certainly looking forward to test drive it. In addition to the commercials that are running, we're thinking someone related to this anti-iPhone … [Read more...]

Apple Targeting Fall Release For Tablet Computer

Where there's smoke there's either an iTablet or just more iTablet rumors. Just last week, rumors swirled around a mysterious tablet device that would be available on Verizon Wireless. Now comes word via Financial Times that Apple is "racing to offer a tablet-sized computer for the Christmas season". Specs are nothing more but speculation, but FT says the screen may be up to 10 inches when measured diagonally.Netbook computers are gaining in popularity, but Apple seem uninterested in that particular market. A tablet computer could find a sweet spot between iPhone/iPod touch and the companies laptop line that starts at $999. It's like the tablet computer would be more Internet device than phone, but the partnership with Verizon could … [Read more...]

Verizon To Get iPhone In 2009?

According to a few well placed sources (one being a Verizon insider), 9to5mac is reported that Apple could announce a deal to bring the iPhone to Verizon at Macworld 2009.  This news comes in spite of reports that Apple has an exclusivity deal with AT&T for as long as 5 years from the initial launch. Of course, when Apple first announced the iPhone, word was the exclusivity deal ran through 2009.The article cites recent iPhone job posts where knowledge of EVDO and CDMA are required, both technologies used by Verizon Wireless and Sprint. Apple always has their eye on the future and 2009 brings Android handsets, a more diverse line from RIM include the touchscreen BlackBerry Storm and the eventual release of Palm's next generation … [Read more...]
