iPhone 5

iPhone 5

The iPhone 5 is Apple’s current model. It was announced on September 12, 2012 with the release happening on September 21st. This model was significant because it represented a major change in the size of the display. It features a 4-inch display, where all previous models had a 3.5-inch screen. While available on legacy models, it supports all of the features of Apple's iOS 6 software update that includes refinements to Siri, integration with Facebook and a new Maps application that has drawn criticism for its lack of data accuracy. In late 2012, Google released Google Maps for iOS, a standalone application that brings the same high quality mapping data as had been on previous iOS releases.

The iPhone 5 supports 4G LTE networks. It features a new aluminum chassis that is both thin and incredibly light. While the 4-inch retina display is impressive, the show stopper might just be how light the device is compared to previous generations. Apple has yet to announce a replacement, but rumors suggest the iPhone 5S will be available in the fall of 2013. Changes at this point, appear to be mostly internal, including a faster processor and improved camera optics. Nothing is certain until it becomes official.
