maps_gallery_1

As part of today's big events, Apple has been showing off some of the features of iOS 6 running on the new iPhone 5. First off the bench was Maps, now completely sans-Google, with 3D buildings, points of interest,  flyover, and turn-by-turn directions. I'm still shedding a tear for the loss of public transport information. Safari can now go fullscreen, and sync tabs via iCloud. Mail will let you tag people as VIPs, and messages from them will get shunted into their own mailbox. One of the big new features is Passbook, which was shown off with Delta, Starwood Hotels, and more. It's tickets, coupons, movie tickets, and more. Photo Streams will now allow you to subscribe to streams of your friends and relatives, … [Read more...]

Apple Taking Down Sites Illegally Selling iOS 6 UDID Slots

iOS 6

Over the past few years, there have been a number of websites started with the intent of selling UDID slots. For $99, anyone can become a 'developer'. This extends to journalists, hobbyists and pretty much anyone who doesn't mind paying the small yearly fee. These developer accounts are intended for, wait for it, developers. As such, they come with an allotment of UDID slots. This enables the 'developer' to test their application across an array of iOS devices and users. There is a demand for early betas of iOS, especially among those not willing to spend $99. As a result, sites began cropping up and offering UDID slots for a small fee. Wired did an expose on the sites, some of whom were raking in upwards of $75,000. As a result of that … [Read more...]

Apple’s iOS 6 Maps To Include Yelp Check-In Points

Yelp

With the release of iOS 6, Apple’s Maps application will reportedly allow for check-ins using the third party Yelp app. Yelp has been one of the more popular applications on iOS and will undoubtedly see growth if included within the default maps app. iOS 6 will see a major change, with a new Apple powered Maps application. Since the original iPhone released in 2007, the ‘Maps’ app had been powered using Google Maps. Yelp allows users to rate and review an assortment of retail establishments that range from hotels to restaurants to local businesses. The check-in feature would likely have an adverse affect on Foursquare, an app whose primary function is to share your location with friends and family. iOS 6 brings deep Facebook … [Read more...]

iOS 6 Supports Photo and Video Uploads Via Safari Web Browser

iOS 5 choose file

In previous versions of iOS, it was not possible to upload files through Safari, given it's lack of a filesystem.  If you have browsed our forums or other website that allows for file uploads, there is no current way to access a file to share from your iPhone. The most common use might be attaching a photo for upload, which isn't possible. The choose file is not accessible in iOS 5 and previous versions. The workaround for many sites, our site included, is to offer an iOS app with that functionality built-in. This has been changed with the current iOS 6 beta release.   As noted by fellow XenForo user Dinh Thanh, iOS 6 now allows for uploading photos or videos from within Safari. Devoid of a filesystem or Files app, the choice … [Read more...]
