Steve Jobs Confirms No iPad/iPhone Tethering

A Swedish man and Apple fan took the initiative to email Steve Jobs about tethering together the iPhone to the iPad, and received one of Jobs’ notoriously curt replies. Jezper Söderlund asked:

I’ll keep it short.

I’m Jezper from Sweden, a long time Apple fan, currently about to replace the very last computer at home with a brand spanking new iMac i7. I’m also awaiting the release of the iPad. However, I have one question:

Will the wifi-only version somehow support tethering thru my iPhone?

Two devices, based on the same OS, with already built-in technology to share one data plan suggests a secondary contract could possibly be redundant.

From the look of your keynote, where the iPad sits well between my MacBook Pro and my iPhone, I was hoping the three of them could interact as seamless as possible.

All the best,

Jezper Söderlund

To which Jobs replied:

No.

Sent from my iPhone

So much for that!

One of the great mysteries as to who actually responds to those emails, but Jobs certainly has a say in what gets sent. Says a lot about him and not in a good way.

It’s also very difficult to imply any sense of feeling in an email response. Did he say no with a smile on his face? Or did he pound out the letters ‘N’ ‘O’ as hard as he could and then throw his phone across the room? lol Granted a very short response with no explanation leads one to believe more of the latter. :)

That seems to me like a rude response. He could at least put no into a sentence.

    I stillStill think it’s possible.

  5. KrakaJap says:

Of course… as long as you have a jailbroken iPhone you can share your data plan to the iPad via a handful of “tethering” apps. :)

  6. I plan on getting an iPad. I will not get one with a data plan as I already have Verizon’s MiFi 2200 hotspot which my family shares on trips and such. Will just add the iPad as one of the additional devices.

  7. Steve is a jackass, looking forward to the iPhone and iPad being replaced with a more open standard device.
