The Sparrow app for Mac is widely hailed as one of the best third party email applications around — so why has the new iPhone app left such a sour taste in user’s mouths? Two words: Push Notifications.

That’s right, one of the most heralded and anticipated email apps of the year is lacking what can only be called a fundamental feature: it doesn’t have Push Notifications. The thing is, it’s not their fault. Apparently, a beta of Sparrow had Push Notifications, but used an API to do so that Apple didn’t approve of — so the app was rejected. Sparrow has put up a statement discussing this on their website, but hopefully a workaround is on the way.

Other than that, early reviews are overwhelmingly positive, especially citing the excellent design of the app.
