According to AllThingsD, their sources indicate that Apple will host a special iPhone event on September 10th to introduce a new iPhone. There has been no shortage of speculation regarding features and rumored release dates which have since passed. ATD is a trusted publication with a great track record and honestly, this just makes sense. On what is the second Tuesday of September, this might be the first event where Apple introduces not one, but two new iPhones.
The flagship is likely to be the iPhone 5s. Based on what we’ve been hearing, one major selling point will be a fingerprint sensor. This will likely be used for locking and unlocking the device. It could also pave the way for purchases using your iPhone. Purchasing items with smartphones is available now on Android devices that have NFC using Google Wallet, but it hasn’t taken off. Apple’s Passbook in theory allows payments, but setup can be a bit cumbersome. A fingerprint scanner tied into a payment system might see greater adoption, if the right partnerships are in place.
The second device could be the long-awaited low-cost (cheap) iPhone 5c. The ‘c’ stands for colors, although I’d question whether that’s a good decision. Some have argued that Apple discounting previous generation iPhones is sufficient enough to attract consumers who are value conscious. Sales are older iPhones have been brisk, but there’s a tremendous amount of potential for greater sales. One big plus will be a presence on the shelves of Apple stores. While older devices were certainly very capable, they are the ‘old model’. While the specs of the iPhone 5c won’t be on par with the flagship model, expect it to be extremely competitive. Apple will likely cut corners on the processor and of course, there is savings from going with plastic over aluminum. The marketing that surrounds an array of colors won’t hurt either.
iOS 7 beta continues at a fast pace. History tells us that with each new software release, there is a new iPhone to accompany it. This year is no different. All Things D has a great track record with their sources, so it appears it is go time for September 10th. Based on that announcement date, the launch date should be sometime during the following week.
