Remember how earlier this year, Rock Band players were met with a warning that the app would not be functional at the end of May? EA swiftly backpedalled on that announcement, but it looks like the death of Rock Band is still happening, just in a different form. All the current Rock Band titles in the App Store — Rock Band, Rock Band Reloaded, and Rock Band Reloaded for the iPad — now all carry the following warning:
IMPORTANT NOTE: On July 31, our Rock Band games will no longer be available on the App Store, and you won’t be able to purchase songs after that date. For more info, please visit help.ea.com.
EA has explained the reason for this in a FAQ, but the rub is that EA’s licensing agreement with Harmonix has ended, so EA no longer has the license to the Rock Band brand. You’ll still be able to play the app if you have it, but there won’t be any more updates or more songs.
With Harmonix having the license again, maybe they’ll release an iOS app, but the EA versions are going bye-bye.
