3Gs is a speed demon!!!
I bought the 32G iPhone 3Gs. I walked into AT&T late in the day Friday expecting them to be sold out. To my surprise they had a couple left and I decided to go ahead and get mine before they sold out. I did not want to wait for a restock in the event they sold out. The guy at AT&T suggested a car charger, screen protectors, and a case, but I informed him that I had all of the accessories in advance. He then wanted to give me an intro into the iPhone. After he went through all the cool things about the iPhone, he asked me what kind of phone I was coming from. He seemed kind of befuddled when I said I had an iPhone already. After he learned of that he asked for the sim and I was on my way. When he handed me the phone the first thing I did was opened the camera and took a short video clip. I wanted to see the quality of the video from the device. The video quality was great, it played clear and smooth. After I took the video I put the phone in my pocket and finished up with the AT&T guy. Total time spent in the AT&T store was around 25 minutes at the most. It could have been faster if he would have asked me if I had questions instead of just giving me information I was already aware of. AT&T could have also saved me some time if they didn't make their clerks try to upgrade texting plans. Neither of those issues were a big deal, but we did spend around five minutes trying to get me to upgrade my texting plan.
After leaving the store, running some errands, and picking up my daughter, I got home and played with the device a bit. I took a video clip of my daughter playing outside. I reviewed the video and it was clear and looked good. I then proceeded to send the video to YouTube. This process took around 10 minutes on 3G for a video that was around a minute and a half long. After the video was uploaded, I clicked the link to check out the video and the quality was lowered. The video was grainy and streaky, but loaded quickly. I wondered why it lost so much quality, and realized I was viewing it on 3G. Later I viewed the video while on wireless and it was good quality. The total process from recording, to being able to share on YouTube, does not take alot of effort or time. They have streamlined the process and made it easy to post videos and share them. You can also trim video clips. When you trim the clip, instead of making a new copy of the trimmed clip, it edits the original and scraps the trimmed parts. It would have been nice if they could have made a new copy of the trimmed video and left the original as it. I am sure we will be seeing new apps in the appstore for video editing soon. The camera/video recorder is a big improvement. Macro and auto-focus seem to work well, and the camera flashes open without lag.
The voice recognition on this phone works well. There is no programming, or calibrating needed. You can press the home button until you hear the beep, and say dial 987654321 and it dials it. This is right out of the box. When you get your contacts synced up you could say call (insert a contact name here), and it will call that person. I have not experienced problems with this feature in the small amount of time I have played with it. It seems to work very well.
The speed of this phone is a great improvement. It is snappy and ready to go. This upgrade is probably the best improvement to the device. The voice recorder which was added in the 3.0 upgrade works well and is pleasant to use. The compass seems to work well, but there have been a couple times where it seemed to be off. It corrected after the figure 8 calibration though. I am excited to see the MMS and new network speeds once AT&T pull it together. There is also a battery percentage meter option, which is great! All in all this new iPhone is a good improvement, I would recommend upgrades to all V1 users, and The V2 users should also consider this upgrade.
Mobile News Network
This app does a decent job of loading quickly so you can read some news. I have a small problem though. Local news from my area is Indianapolis. The news I get is from The Journal Gazette, which is Fort Wayne. That is not very local!!! The layout and usability is great though. This will be a five when I can get actual local news!
Dizzy Bee
Dizzy Bee is a game where you control a little bee by twisting and turning your phone. Moving your bee through the challenging courses is a bit difficult on some of the levels but all levels are beatable. Control your bee around the course to get all the flowers and release all the fruit from the ice cubes while avoiding the bad guys! Levels are timed so you can always go back and try to better a previous time set. Sound effects are great as well as the graphics. Gameplay is also very good. Challenging enough for an adult and fun enough for kids. I believe there is a free version so you can try the simple levels before you shell out your hard earned $2.99. By the way, it is well worth the $2.99!!!!
Carries Dots
This game had very good intentions when the developer made it, but it needs alot of work. I found it hard to play and impossible to get used to. I ended up removing it from my phone.
VoiceNotes
VoiceNotes is a free app from the app store. It is the voice recorder that Apple forgot to put on the phone. This app is very simple and fairly easy to use. Works with or without headphones.
Creating a voice note is simple. Touch the + button and then touch the record button, say what you wish and touch the stop button. Your message will be saved and you can label it. After you have accumulated several voice notes, you can use the search feature to find the one you are looking for in a long list. (as long as you label well) There were some bugs but I believe they have been fixed.
The layout and visual appeal are very plain, with nothing unnecassary to get in the way. There are really no extra features to mention.
This app is straight and to the point. Do you need to record messages using your voice??? Here is an app that does just that......and it is free!!!
Aurora Feint is free?!?
I cannot believe that such a nice app was given away!! It is not perfect and there are quite a few bugs to be worked out, but given the timeline they were working with, they did a great job. Aurora Feint is a bejeweled type game with a lot of twists. Line up three or more matching blocks and they will be mined. You can turn your phone to the side to slide the blocks together on one side of the screen, or you can turn it completely upside down to bring out more blocks. The blocks can only be moved horizontally, but you can move blocks with your phone flipped in landscape mode. That puts a new "twist" on this type of game. After mining resources you can shop for upgrades and develop even better mining skills.
The graphics on this game are great, everything looks well designed. Gameplay needs some work. I noticed clipping and stalling when moving blocks sometimes.
The sountrack is also great. It fits the game very well, as do the sound effects. Sometimes the music will stop during a game and not resume, but I am sure they will have this bug worked out soon enough.
This game eats up battery life like Kobiyashi eats hot dogs, FAST!! I am sure this will be resolved in the future also though.
This is by far, hands down, the best free game available on the app store at this time. There are alot of bugs to be worked out, but the developers are working on correcting them and have a forum setup for the reporting of these bugs and errors. For being young developers (I think they are 23ish) they have done excellent work thus far and will probably be very sucessful in their future endeavors.
This game will EASILY be a five star once the bugs get worked out. Congrats to you two, Jason and Danielle, you have created the best free game the app store has to offer!!! I am sure the future versions of this game will be great!
With WiFi, Pandora is a music lovers dream.
I have given Pandora 5 stars. This FREE application rocks. What style or sound would you like to listen to?? Just type in the comparable song or artist and Pandora creates a radio station using comparable music from the Music Genome Project. What does this mean???? It means you can find a new artist that has a similar style to the one you selected. For example, I will select Moby. The first song played was "Put The Headphones On" by Moby. The second song was "The Piano" by Enigma. Each song thereafter was similar in styling to Moby. If you don't care for a song that the radio station is playing you can skip it! You are limited to 6 skips per hour per station though. After your skips are up just create a new station and you are good to go. Pause is also an option. Artwork is displayed for most tracks so if you like a couple songs from an artist you can see what their album artwork looks like so you can visit a music store and buy the album. (Do people still do this?) A click of a button will tell you why the song is playing. For example the song I have playing now is being played because it features electronica roots, ambient soundscapes, use of tonal harmonies, and a highly synthetic sonority. While listening to a track you can give it a thumbs up, a thumbs down, you can bookmark the song or the album, and you can buy the song from iTunes with a click of a button. Using the Edge service from AT&T this application is not very smooth, but with WIFI it is superb! So if you have a WIFI connection, prepare for hours of entertainment. I have heard so many songs that I had forgotten and listened to a ton of new tracks as well.
Review
Well I got this case about a month ago and decided to give it a try before I gave any opinions. Finding instructions and information on YouTube, and this site made the task of installing this case a piece of cake. I had no bubbles on the screen like other people had. (I did follow the directions of wiping your hand on the screen prior to installing the case. That could be why I had no bubbles, because I intentionally tried to get bubbles and didn't.) This case is like 2 or 3 separate accessories. First it has covers for the touch screen, the camera lens, the light sensor, and the apple logo. The screen cover works well as the touch screen has only suffered a tiny bit of "sense loss". In my case it made my iPhone use better because my "less deliberate" touches are not sensed. I have noticed no difference in the pictures I take using the case, so the camera lens cover also works well. The apple logo cover piece is the same piece of material as the camera lens cover, so your precious logo will remain unscratched. However, the material that covers the screen, lens, and logo, is not scratch resistant. In the month that I have been using this, the screen cover has been scratched a bit. Minor scratches but scratches none-the-less. Since the purpose of this material is to keep the screen from being scratched and to keep dust out, it has done well. (If the cover becomes so scratched I can't use it, I will remove it and still be better off than some of the other cases.) The second "accessory" to this case is the hard plastic case that snaps together, in which all of the clear covers are attached. It is a hard plastic material that is fit well to the phone, so the phone does not seem to "move about" in the case. (A previous case I had was not fit well to the phone and it scratched up my phone terribly.) This case has kept my phone in good condition, and has not scratched the chrome bezel. (My previous iPhone had a scratched bezel from a clear case I was using. Very irritating!) The hard plastic has covered openings for the camera, the apple logo, the light sensor above the screen, the screen itself, it also has a fabric type cover for the earpiece, the microphone, and the speaker. This fabric cuts into volume a bit, and that gets worse when you have it in the holster, which has no openings for sound to escape. It has uncovered openings for the headphone jack, power button, the volume button, the home button, and the charging/syncing jack. These openings are covered up by the third "accessory", the softer "rubber" cover. This component will keep your phone from sliding from your hand or sliding around inside your vehicle. It covers the buttons but everything works through the case except for the silence switch. You would have to remove the case to switch it. This case also has a holster with a swivel belt clip, which when used would completely cover the screen adding another layer of protection. So far I have been very pleased with this case. I was worried about getting it before-hand because of all the negative things I heard about it. I am glad I got it though because all of the negative things I had heard must have been about "the first phase" mentioned in this thread. The only negative things about this case are the silence switch covered up, and the screen cover scratching. But since other cases don't even have a screen cover, this case is still a step ahead. This case is a little more expensive than average cases, but it is not your average case. Well worth the money!!
Belkin Remix Acrylic Case
Ok, I gave the design 4 stars because I liked how the clip adjusted to stand up the phone. Unfortunately, the case was hard to snap together and alot of people didn't get the job done properly and their phones fell out!! All buttons are accessible though.
Build quality gets a three because it should have been built to snap together better. Once you get it snapped together it holds fine, but its hard to tell if it snapped completely or not.
Fit gets 1 star because I can't give it 0. Since it does not fit snug enough, dirt can get under the case and causes scratches on the back. This case made my phone look like I left it in the tiger exhibit at the Zoo. If you are buying a case to protct your phone from cosmetic damage, this is not the case for you!
Usability gets a 4 because you can use your phone without this case getting in your way.
Value gets a 3. It could have been better but when you pay for something to protect your phone from scratches, and it causes the scratches, it loses its value as a protection device. So it should be noted that this case has no value as a protection device, but three stars as a carrying device.
