Best phone in the world
Use this phone for 5 minutes and you will quickly notice that is the most advanced and entertaining phone you've ever used. There isn't even a question in my mind that it's the best phone in world. The price is a little steep, but consider that you're getting an iPod and a really nice Phone in one, including mobile internet, and the price is justified. As of now, it's missing a few simple features like picture messaging, mass texting, and changing alert sounds but we all suspect that these will be added in a future update from Apple. I'm completely happy with it.
Awesome,but not perfect...yet
Like the title says the phone is cool but not perfect. I really think that these numbers can be improved over time. Especially seeing how it can be updated through iTunes. I gave the phone a 4 seeing how audio is not that great but still gets the job done. I really hope that this can be fixed through an update. iPod definitely deserves a 5 because the interface is smooth and almost flawless. The album art I think really makes the whole iPod feature stand out and of course the cover flow. Audio quality in ipod is also incredible...with the earbuds in. With speakers not so much. Again i hope this can be fixed. Moving on to the internet the 3 could have probably have been a 4 if it supported flash an 3G from the start. Again updates can fix this i know but if you have tried to look at YouTube over edge it is pretty bad. Extra software got a four because most of them are nice features, but only 1 I hardly ever use...stocks. But that is just me then again. Value though is where the iPhone really pulls through. For the already great features the being able to and on another feature and improve what is already there is great. I really think that this phone is worth a $600 investment. That is me though but i hope i have encouraged you to pick a side on the iPhone debate that may role on between your mind and wallet.
Very cool but it doesn't live up to the promises
I picked up the iPhone yesterday, and like most others was in love instantly. However, after using it for the day, I believe it's going back to AT&T today. If Apple had put this on a different network, I'd most likely be keeping it. However, the AT&T network is killing me. It doesn't ring about half of the time, has dropped a call, and if you are on the internet and Edge is actively transferring data, it completely ignores any call that comes in.
Pros:
- Great design
- iPod/video iPod is better than the regular iPod
- Visual voice mail is revolutionary
- Google Maps app works much better than on other platforms
- Great integration with Mac OS X apps I already use
- God is it beautiful
Cons:
- Doesn't work with my installed interface in my car.
- Poor call quality
- Drops/ignores calls
- Signal fluctuates constantly
- Slooooow internet speeds (campared to my Q on Verizon)
- Safari unexpectedly quits
- Freezes up for a few seconds at a time seemingly randomly
In all, I'm torn. If the phone part worked well, I'd ignore the other problems, and get rid of my Q on Verizon. However, this IS a phone, and if that part doesn't work, it's going to cost me business (I'm a pilot and I get my dispatches via cell phone). If they had only built this to be on Verizon, I'd be in love. However, as it stands it's like a girlfriend I had in college. Beautiful, fun, and amazing, but at the same time unpredictable and infuriating. Not the kind of gal/phone to settle down with.
Technolust to Technolove
I gave in to my technolust and bought an iPhone. I have been a Blackberry user on Verizon and had the latest WorldPhone. I was very happy with both. I waited 2 weeks to cancel my Blackberry just in case. When the Verizon person asked me why after 4 years I was canceling, I said only one word "iPhone". Then she asked if there was anything they could do to keep me as a customer. I repeated "iPhone".
I am an over 50 IT geek who uses a PowerMac for all personal business, and work on a PC. I truly believe that the iPhone is the begining of the end for laptops. A better network, a SD card slot, some software updates, a usb port for a memory stick, maybe a few apps for financial matters, and why buy a laptop? You can browse the web comfortably and anywhere! You can send and receive email anywhere. It has already exceeded my expectations. I am in technolove. ;->
This Darn Phone
Overall great phone.
Amazing little device
It works much better than I had even hoped. The touch interface is super responsive, the web and email are very fast (when on a wifi network). The EDGE network is much slower, but at least I was able to check my email in the middle of nowhere yesterday. That could not happen on 3G at this time.
The iPod really is the best iPod they made. In many ways, it makes me question whether the current "big" iPods are really that great. Movies on the iPhone are amazing on the larger screen. The phone quality with ATT is much better than I expected, even in relatively remote areas. (I know of others with ATT-based reception problems, however.)
The mapping feature is quite useful in the week that I've had it. I can also type quite fast on it (I'm a male who wears a size 9 wedding ring.) The feature I use most has been email. The screen makes it very easy to read the emails if you have decent eyesight (I'm 35 and nearsighted without glasses.)
The internet is very useful. I can do anything on it that I can do on a full-sized computer. Obviously, the small screen makes it a little less fun to browse the internet than on a full-sized computer, but everything works.
Finally, I've got to mention that the iPhone is fast. I never feel like I'm waiting for anything except possibly the camera (although it's still faster than any other camera phone I've used). Using this phone is a real pleasure. I've heard reviewers say that it takes up to 5 steps to make a call. (press button to unlock phone, slide to confirm, click to phone, scroll to contact, pick number) That's true, but it's still FASTER than using a regular handset because the five steps happen as fast as you can type. I'm easily frustrated, so a fast machine really makes using it a pleasure.
This Thing Is Sweet!!!!
his is the coolest and most expensive phone in the world!!!
My Review is indepth...for you naysayers

Great Platform -- v1 apps need work, but all can b
Hey folks -- just joined the forum today and looks good. Looking forward to a happy & healthy "power user" relationship with the iPhone and ya'll
For no particular reason other than my desire to put my thoughts in one place (perhaps in the hope that someone from Apple reads them and incorporates them), here are my thoughts on the iPhone after using it for the past week:
My background: I'm a techno-nerd, power-user, whatever you want to call it. I'm 29, run my own business, and am a big fan of the PDA functionality (as opposed to the music/video stuff.) Never owned an iPod until now. Switched over from a Treo 650 which I've had for the past 2 years.
With that said...my thoughts:
Hardware:
-- Hardware is nearly perfect (hence my posting this in the software forum). Only thing I miss from my Treo is an LED of some sort. I was expecting Apple to put some kinda glowing/heartbeat white or blue LED on the iPhone and was surprised to find none. It's incredibly useful to know when you've got service, and on my Treo it would blink rapidly when I had new email. It's nice to be able to look at your phone and know whether you've got voicemail/email/SMS without having to physically turn it on.
Software:
-- The email app needs work. I've been running ChatterEmail on my Treo for the past few years and that is a serious, serious program. It's significantly more advanced/functional than Blackberry, the gold standard for corporate email. The mail program on the iPhone is about 5 years less advanced than even an older version of Chatter, and I miss it. But I'm sure it will get better. Specific things I miss include
o The ability to send from multiple 'personalities' (i.e. I pick which email address/signature my message comes from when I click send. That way I can send some messages from my personal account with no signature and others from my business account with my company signature)
o Support for the IMAP IDLE command. This is the (more) standard way to enable real-time push email. Nearly every major IMAP provider supports this, and with my Treo messages arrived _instantly_ (WAY faster than any of my friends with Crackberries). Having to do an every-15-minute check or, more likely, sitting there and pressing refresh on the iPhone is a major step backwards. And using Yahoo is a no-go, as I cannot change the "from" address.
o Improved IMAP folder support - For some reason I can't seem to get folders working beyond the Inbox on any of my IMAP accounts. I keep/file messages in a bunch of folders, and it'd be nice to be able to access those.
o Improved multi-account support - I'd like to be able to have multiple email accounts configured, but only be notified when a particular one gets a new message. This way I can, for example, have my old college email address and all its glorious spam get sent to one folder and never bug me unless I'm bored, and have my important day-to-day business email go to a different account and ping me when new messages arrive.
o Auto-purge when deleted - I like to read emails on my phone then go home and download all the messages via POP into Outlook (maybe I'm just a creature of habit and I should be using IMAP instead, but whatever...). On my Treo there was a setting to auto-purge emails when deleted on the server. On iPhone the most immediate setting is "purge daily" -- which doesn't cut it. So now when I go through 100 emails on my phone and delete the ones I don't need/am done with, I get home that night to sync up my Outlook and all the messages I already deleted are downloaded, so I need to sift through them again. Alls we need is an "instant purge" option.
-- To-do list app (!!) I still can't believe this is missing. It was probably the second-most-used app on my Treo (next to the email app). Nothing fancy needed -- just a way to sync my Tasks with Outlook, mark them as completed, in-progress or not started and review a day, week or month's worth of tasks. I love being able to go on a road trip and plow through tasks while in the car - check, check, check. Please give this to me Apple (or at least let someone else do it!)
-- Speaking of that, 3rd-party app support would be nice. I won't harp on this one because I'm sure lots of people are discussing it and Apple has their reasons for not allowing it (yet?), but let developers be developers and write apps for the phone! I'm sure there will be some amazing stuff if this happens.
-- Cut-and-Paste, Highlighting/Selecting Text. Not much to say here either as I'm sure it's a known issue and others have talked about it, but it's hugely frustrating to have to sit and hold the delete/backspace key when I want to delete a block of text.
-- Copy # to Clipboard - when SMS'ing someone a phone number or writing an email, it'd be nice to be able to copy a phone number from the contacts list and paste it into the message. I have to do this quite often and the Treo let me do this.
-- Sync 'notes' -- again I'm sure this is a known issue, but I'd like to be able to sync the Notes on iPhone with the Notes in Outlook. I keep a bunch of important stuff there (frequent flyer numbers, company EINs, bank account #s, etc.) and it seems silly that I have to go an re-enter everything in iPhone by hand.
Things I don't really care about but I'm sure others do:
-- Video recording. It's a gimmick to me. The camera phone is nice and I don't really need to shoot low-quality grainy low-framerate video on my phone. But it would definitely help the user community to be able to directly upload to YouTube from the phone...
-- IM/iChat. I find instant messaging a huge time-waster and very interruptive, but I know I'm in the minority here, so people will be very happy when this gets released. Just don't put this higher on the priority list than a task list!
I think that's it for now. What I'm mostly psyched about (and why I'm not returning it despite the downgraded functionality) is that this phone is more a platform than the end-all-be-all. It's an OSX box, and every single thing I'm disappointed with can be fixed with some software updates. Ahh to be on the bleeding edge...

Overall, pretty good....
The iPhone meets most of my expectations. iPod sounds great, Internet works well on WiFi, but slow on Edge network. Best of all, all the apps are well integrated with each other (e.g., press on the address in your contacts and it comes up on the map app).
HOWEVER, how can Apple release a $600 phone with horrible ear speaker and speaker phone volume? I have owned at least 5+ cell phones over the years, and this is the worst for volume. Any phone MUST overcome the noise of a busy street (e.g., NYC) for a business person. I have the volume all the way up outside and I can barely hear the person speaking. It's better on the headphones, but not by much.
This is very disappointing. Apple did such a great job on everything else, but obviously did not test the unit enough outside (or the testers used the headphones all the time).
What is especially strange is the iPod volume can blow your ears out. So it's not like something is wrong with my headphone jack. Volume all the way up on phone compared to iPod is s huge difference. When I am inside, I still need the volume most of the way up for the phone.
I just hope a software upgrade will fix this problem.
