According to ad network MoPub, the weekend after Google Maps launched on iOS 6, the number of users skyrocketed by 29%. The company provides ads for 12,000 apps, and over the days since Google Maps came to iOS, saw a significant spike in user numbers. This plays into the idea that people have been waiting for Google Maps before updating to iOS 6.
Talking to TechCrunch, MoPub’s CEO said:
“we observed since the launch of Google Maps for iOS 6 a 30 percent increase in unique iOS 6 users, and we think it’s related to Google Maps. It verifies the hypothesis that people were actually holding back to upgrade until Google Maps was available.”
Google Maps for iOS was download an astonishing 10 million times in just two days, and I’m sure we all know some people who were holding out for that app before upgrading.
While it may be a bit of an embarrassment for Apple that so many people were holding out on upgrading — at least even more people are on iOS 6 now.
