According to a report from the Wall Street Journal’s China Real Time Report, component makers say they have received orders for the iPad mini in the excess of 10 million units for the fourth quarter. To put that in perspective, Amazon had placed half the amount for the Kindle Fire.
Apple has yet to announce the iPad mini, with most prognosticators expecting an announcement sometime during the middle to end of October. Based on previous Apple events, one could surmise that October 17th or October 24th are likely candidates for the announcement, with availability to come shortly thereafter.
Demand will be high, regardless of the price point, which has been rumored anywhere from $199 to $299. There is a big psychological difference between a sub-$200 tablet and a sub-$300 tablet. If Apple somehow finds pricing for the iPad mini at $199, would 10 million units be sufficient?
