Report: 50% of App Revenue Goes To Just 25 Devs

Just how big are the big players in the App Store? According to a recent report by Canalys, large enough that just 25 developers account for half of all the app revenue on the App Store and Google Play. Their research claims that over the course of just 20 days, those 25 developer groups pulled in a whopping $60 million.

Canalys used “App Interrogator surveys”, and analyzed transactions over the first 20 days of November. What they saw was that those 25 developers pulled in a huge piece of the pie. They also noted, that barring Pandora, all were game developers, like “Zynga, Electronic Arts, Disney, Kabam, Rovio, Glu, Gameloft and Storm8’s TeamLava.” Zynga, for instance, had 15 of the top 300 grossing iPhone apps.

It would be really interesting to compare these numbers to those from the early days of the App Store — it really does feel like it’s harder and harder for smaller developers to make a splash in the way they used to. You’ll see the occasional indie dev make some noise, but the big publishers do seem to rule the roost.
