The handy Reminders app in iOS 8 is simple, yet robust way to manage your to-do lists between your iPhone, iPad and Mac. Heck, with the web based Reminders app, even PC users can manage their busy lives from their desktop computers. It’s not uncommon, nor is it difficult, to create ten or more lists. There is tremendous value to having multiple lists, each created with a specific set of tasks in mind. While you can use the search feature to seek out a specific reminder, grouping like-minded reminders is probably the best method from managing your day to day. Taking this one step further, you can reorder your lists and sort your reminders by priority. This should help keep you focused on your most important tasks.
How to reorders reminders lists on iOS 8
The design of the Reminders app in iOS uses an extremely large font for the list names. As a result, you can only view 7 lists without having to scroll. Let’s face it, your ‘above the fold’ lists are going to get the most attention. As you create new lists, by default they end being at the top of your screen, which isn’t always ideal. To reorder your lists, follow these steps:
- Open the Reminders app and make sure you are in list view.
- Tap and hold the title of the list you’d like to reorder. You’ll see a subtle pop-up, teasing the first reminder in that list. Think of this as a visual cue that you can move this list.
- Drag the list up or down depending on your preference.
That’s it, an easy way to keep your lists in the order that makes the most sense to you.
How to sort iPhone reminders by priority
iOS lets you sort reminders by priority, but the process is entirely manual. It’s one of the drawbacks of using Apple’s Reminders app and things haven’t changed in iOS 8. To set a priority for a reminder, tap on the ‘i’ and choose between ‘!’, ‘!!’ or ‘!!!’. Once you make those selections, you can easily view your most important tasks as designated by three exclamation points. Here’s how to manually sort:
- Tap on the ‘Edit’ button within any list.
- Next to the task you’d like to sort, tap and hold on the three dash lines at the end of the row.
- Drag to reorder and sort your reminders based on priority.
Mac tip: The Reminders app on the Mac allows you to automatically sort based on priority. Navigate to View > Sort By > Priority. Unfortunately, I’ve found that changing your sorting on your Mac does not affect your iOS reminders.
It’s natural that some of your reminders and lists are going to be more important than others. By reordering your lists and sorting your reminders based on priority, you’ll be well on your way to focusing on your most important to-do list items.
