The Notification Center in iOS 7 presented a new way to show important information in a new ‘Today’ view. With a single swipe down gesture, you can easily access the date, weather, reminders, stocks and calendar events. This is in addition to all of your notifications. When you rely on your iPhone to provide you with information that matters to you, the default settings in iOS 7 can result in information overload. You can remove weather and stocks from the notification center on iPhone and customize the settings to create the ultimate iPhone Notification Center, personalized just for you.
How to remove weather, stocks from Notification Center
Apple still doesn’t provide a way to remove or Apple included apps, but thankfully, you can remove them from the notification center.
- Navigate to Settings > Notification Center
- Scroll to the ‘Today View’
- Toggle Stocks to off (white).
Removing weather can also be done, but it’s not as obvious. Repeat steps 1-2 above, but toggle off the Today Summary. This will remove weather. Another way to do this, though not recommended, is to remove access to location data for the weather app. The trouble with this method is that it will render the stock weather app useless. This isn’t such a big if you use a third party weather app. For kicks, here’s how to do it.
- Navigate to Settings > Privacy
- Tap on Location Services
- Scroll to the ‘Weather‘ app and toggle to ‘off’.
How to customize the Notification Center Today view
In addition to weather and stocks, you can also remove calendar events, reminders and tomorrow’s calendar’s events. In order, their respective on/off toggle switches are ‘Calendar Day View’, Reminders and Tomorrow Summary. Here’s a look at Calendar Day View enabled and disabled. Both have the Tomorrow view enabled.
iOS can also help provide you with information about an upcoming destination, including the amount of time it will take for you to arrive. Your iPhone will collect information about your travels and start to predict your next location. When it does, the ‘time to travel’ will automatically appear on the Notification Center, provided you have the toggle for that feature enabled.
Re-ordering Items In Today View In Notification Center
For some folks, the Today View is almost perfect, providing quick access to information you need. For those users, you can organize items to present information in order of importance. Well, for the most part. Let’s head over to Settings > Notification Center.
This time around, we’re not going to mess with the toggle switches. Instead, select the ‘Edit‘ link at the top right.
This will reveal a set of three lines next to Calendar Day View, Reminders and Stocks. Press and hold to select one of the three. Drag it up or down to re-order the information to your liking.
Admittedly, I find the Notification Center to be a bit of a bear. Apple assumes that users want access to stocks and information from other stock apps. The ‘Today View’ certainly has appeal to some, but definitely not all users. If you find yourself in the latter group, you’re not alone. Using the tips above, you’ll be able to remove weather, stocks from the Notification Center and customize it to be a streamlined and much more effective presentation of information that matters most to you.
