PadMapper Gets C&D From Craigslist, Now Near Useless

If you’ve gone apartment hunting in the last year or so, you’ve doubtless encountered PadMapper — both the website and iOS app. This supremely useful service scraped information from a number of freely available sources, including Craigslist, and mashed them up with Google Maps, so you could easily see where the apartments are in your city of choice. It was a stupefyingly good website and app for anyone hunting for a new place to live. Was.

Unfortunately, PadMapper just got hit with a C&D by Craigslist’s lawyers, and are being forced to kill Craigslist functionality. Sure, PadMapper still handles Oodle, RentalHomesPlus, Rent.com, ApartmentFinder, and a few others, but CL was the vast majority of listings. You can list list directly to PadMapper using PadLister, but it’s not quite the same.

The internet reaction has been unsurprisingly swift — and it’s understandable why. I recently moved to a new city, and relied on PadMapper to do so, as did a number of other people I know who moved recently. And it’s now all but useless.
