No NFC For The New iPhone 5 After All?

I won’t lie. I was pretty excited about the possibility of the new iPhone 5 having a little NFC chip. After all, NFC is one of those near magic pieces of technology that lets things just work together. Unfortunately, it looks like the parts leak yesterday may have been inaccurate, as two sources have shot down the theory.

Firstly, the incredibly knowledgeable people at AnandTech have explained why the hardware of the iPhone won’t allow for an NFC chip. Here’s the logic:

Given the primarily metal backside of the new iPhone, it’s highly unlikely that NFC is in the cards for this generation. In fact, given the very little space at top and bottom dedicated to those glass RF windows, you can almost entirely rule it out.

It’s a pretty solid takedown, and seems to indicate that we’ll be waiting a while yet for NFC on the iPhone — if it ever happens.

But the real nail in the coffin? Jim Dalrymple’s famous one word response to the quote above.

Yep.

So much for that rumor!
