No-Commitment iPhone 4 Price Revealed

Not one of the lucky folks who got their AT&T upgrade date bumped up by some 6 months? Or do you want to buy an iPhone without any early termination fee whatsoever? The fine folks at TUAW have done the legwork to find out how much that will cost you. Here’s the full breakdown for 16GB/32GB models:

Upgrade okayed for launch: $199/$299

Upgrade date after Jan 1, 2011: $399/$499

No-commitment contract: $599/$699

So, for all those who don’t want to be beholden to AT&T any more than physically necessary to get their phone to work, here’s what it will cost you out of pocket to purchase an iPhone with no early termination fee. For those stuck in the middle bracket, that’s a shitty situation — being charged an extra $200 for not getting AT&T’s mammoth upgrade date shift. Here’s an upside: you might be coming off contract just in time to see another carrier pick up the phone!

I just got off the phone with ATT. My account says i’m eligible for a reduced discount on an iphone now and a full discount on 2/20/2011, so i asked them what that means. He told me that I would be eligible for a full discount as long as i got an iphone 4, 3gs or 3g, but any other phone i would get a “reduced discount”. He also said that I would have to go into an ATT store only to get mine because they would have to look at my account and “correct” it in order for me to get the full discount. I had him mark that on my account so i wouldn’t have any issues, but i’m sure i will still have problems.

I don’t see the need for expletives on the front page…I expect that in the forums, but not in main articles. Unprofessional.

  3. Geo says:

Does that mean no commitment, as in an unlocked to any carrier?? Could it be so?!?!?

    • Fudge says:

Nice try. No commitment would mean, no contract. or no ETF.

      • Greenie says:

Why in the world would someone pay 2.5 times as much money upfront if they can’t even use the phone if they terminate the contract?

Its like paying for a phone upfront and you can’t use it if you move from ATT.

        • mickey says:

well in my case it makes a lot of sense since I’m not in the US 50% of the time. I can buy the phone on no commitment or terminate the contract if there is a decent unlock available and use my GSM microSIMs wherever I am.

    @Geo

hahaha…funny but no way! It means pay through the roof for ATT and have no commitment with them!

  5. tracy says:

I don’t get it. What if I don’t have an iphone, now, my upgrade is 11/29/10, but I want an iphone at a discounted price. Can I get it?

According to *NEW#, i “A full discount on a standard handset or iPhone upgrade is not available at this time but may be on 11/29/10. We can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price with a 2 yr committment and $18 upgrade fee. Please visit a store…blahblah”.

  6. oliver says:

    Dudes,

seriously what does no commitment contract mean. Can anybody explain for dummis. Living abroad so would be happy to pay 699 unlocked.

  7. Andrew says:

My concern is, the last time I purchased an iphone for my line, I was told I had exceeded the number of iPhones allowed to be purchased on a line (2), the only way for me to get around that was to add a new line and then switch the phones.. I want to know if they have changed this? It’s not fair to limit that if they keep coming out with new iPhones.

  8. iApplicate says:

Why do they have to make all of this so confusing?

  9. Marco says:

I find this extremely tempting, and so here come the questions: WHERE can i find (and purchase) a non subsidized phone, ATT? Apple store? Online? I even heard Best Buy.

And (i know it is not available yet, but do you guys think it might be available at the launch date or later?

    Thanks a lot.

no contract is the way to go in my opinoin and thats what i have done and will be doing

  11. steven says:

What a crock my upgrade is jan 9 and I can’t upgrade cuz I’m 8 days out f atnt

  12. KP says:

Well, ATT has decided to stick it to us. They will now introduce a 325 ETF for advanced phone subscribers…. They will decrease the ETF by 10/month. So you might as well buy the unsubsidized phone upfront, if you intend to cancel and use an unlock service….

My company pays for my service, but i cant pick my own phone. So i decided to buy the no commitment phone, so i can just swap ATT sim cards…

  13. Genie says:

can we buy iphone 4 without plan right now? cuz most of them I saw is have to be in a plan or make a plan with AT&T to be able to buy an iphone 4. And please let me know where does it sale. thanks guys

  14. Aaron says:

Hi there, I just wanted to point out since no-one seems to know this
But in Canada, the iPhone 4 is being sold Unlocked since the 4 major carriers in Canada all have it, Apple didnt see much sense in locking it to a specific carrier.

  15. Gustavo says:

this is not a bad idea but $600-$700 for a little phone!!!!! COME ON!!!!!! and in a month there could be an even better one!!!! but i do like the idea!!! i might even go for it!!!!!:)
