According to Engadget, a group of developers has successfully created a software solution to unlock the iPhone.

A few days ago, iPhoneSIMFree put a call out to media looking for the biggest platform to announce and more importantly confirm their iPhone unlock solution. Technology blog than Engadget tested and confirmed the software successfully unlocks the iPhone. From Endadget, "We can confirm with 100% certainty that iPhoneSIMfree.com's software solution completely SIM unlocks the iPhone, is restore-resistant, and should make the iPhone fully functional for users outside of the US."
