Apple Considering 3rd Party Applications?October 8, 2007
By: Christopher Meinck
Whether intentional or not, the latest iPhone software update version 1.1.1 removed all unofficial third party applications. It has been rumored that an announcement regarding official third party application support might come with the release of Leopard, Apple's soon-to-be released operating system. In the days following the release of iPhone Software Update 1.1.1, iPhone users were less than thrilled with the removal of third party applications from the iPhone. To date, Apple only officially supports web based applications and this has caused frustration among end users who are demanding more robust on-device programs. Apple's position has been that third party applications could interfere with AT&T's network. “You need it to work when you need it to work. Cingular doesn’t want to see their West Coast network go down because some application messed up", said Steve Jobs. Clearly, there needs to be some sort of middle ground and perhaps that is a list of "officially supported" applications that are could be made available through iTunes. An announcement regarding support for third party applications could come with the release of Leopard, which is widely rumored to be released on October 26th. Discuss in our iPhone forums.
