George Hotz, who gained notoriety when he unlocked the original iPhone, has released a jailbreaking application for the iPhone named purplera1n. For now, it's Windows only (Windows 7 not supported). The jailbreak requires the latest version of iTunes and an iPhone 3GS with firmware 3.0.
Hotz is working on a Mac version that he promises is "coming soon". Directions for the jailbreak are sparse, but perhaps that's a good thing.
Connect your iPhone normally. Click “make it ra1n”. Wait. On bootup, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app.
