Apple reveals iPhone 3.0 Bluetooth profiles

A knowledge base article is now available on Apple’s support site listing the Bluetooth profiles available in the recently-released 3.0 firmware for all iPhone models and the second-generation iPod touch. Most notably, the article shows an inexplicably limited implementation of the AVRCP profile, which allows audio playback control via a Bluetooth accessory.

Little official information has been provided about the Bluetooth profiles present in earlier iPhone firmware versions. Prior to firmware 3.0, the headset, hands-free, and phone book access profiles were the only ones in evidence in the first-generation iPhone and the iPhone 3G, with many users experiencing varying degrees of compatibility with Bluetooth accessories, particularly car kits.

While the recently-released 3.0 firmware does indeed include, as promised, the stereo audio Bluetooth profile, A2DP, this knowledge base article clearly shows that an accompanying profile, AVRCP, is limited. The AVRCP profile allows remote control of playback functions through a Bluetooth accessory. As implemented in firmware 3.0, the only available remote functions are pause, play, and stop, leaving the skip forward/backward and fast-forward/backward functions out. With this implementation, users are required to make these changes on the iPhone or iPod Touch directly even if the Bluetooth accessory offers controls for these features.

The first-generation iPhone remains the least-equipped iPhone model when it comes to Bluetooth profiles, capable of functions suitable for use with a Bluetooth headset or hands-free device only. The second-generation iPod Touch benefits from the A2DP profile as well as the limited implementation of the AVRCP profile.

No additional information is provided on the reason behind the limited implementation of the AVRCP profile for the iPhone 3G, 3GS, and second-generation iPod Touch.
