What You Need to Know About iPhone 3G

We break down everything you need to know about today's announcement and forthcoming release of Apple's iPhone 3G neatly packaged in one convenient FAQ.

When can I get one?

The iPhone 3G will be available starting on Friday, July 11th. Apple has yet to announce the time.

What is the price?

The iPhone 3G 8GB is $199. iPhone 3G 16GB models are priced at $299.

Is there more than one model?

There are two models. An 8GB model and a 16GB model. The 8GB and 16GB iPhone 3G comes in black. The 16GB iPhone 3G comes in white also.

Where can I get one?

The iPhone 3G will be available at Apple Retail Store locations and AT&T Stores. It will not be available at Apple.com.

What if I have an existing contract?

When you activate the iPhone 3G, you will have to agree to extending your contract with AT&T an additional 2 years.

Does this price requre a contract?

New customers will be required to sign a 2-year committment.

How much is the contract for the iPhone 3G?

Voice plans start at $39.99, with iPhone data plans starting at $30. The lowest plan is $69.99. In contrast, first generation iPhone plans were $59.99

What's the difference between the old iPhone and the iPhone 3G.

The new iPhone features a curved back, which is a black plastic versus the aluminum casing of the first generation iPhone. The iPhone 3G of course supports AT&T's 3G network, so browsing and email will be almost twice as fast.

Are there any downsides to the new iPhone 3G?

The new iPhone 3G utilizes a 3G chipset and this does have an impact on battery life. Talk time is 5 hours according to Apple, whereas the first generation was 8-10 hours talk time.

Does the new iPhone 3G offer GPS navigation?

The iPhone 3G does have GPS built-in. However, you will need a third party application for turn by turn directions. Out of the box, iPhone 3G will support "tracking" using apps like the included Google Maps.
