Palm CEO Ed Colligan, whose company makes the popular Treo smartphone, recently commented on the rumors of Apple entering the smartphone market.
At a Churchill Club breakfast, Colligan responded to questions about a rumored iPhone release from Apple. Colligan remarked, "We've learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone. PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They're not going to just walk in."
Palm manufactures the Treo smartphone and currently in a battle for market share with Mororola (Q smartphone) and Blackberry among others. The latest offering from Palm, the Palm Treo 680, is the first consumer focused smartphone with an emphasis on music. The Treo 680 comes bundled with Yahoo Music Unlimited. Palm is looking to convert "feature phone users" to smartphone owners.
The Apple iPhone will look thier install base of iPod owners to carry one device, the iPhone. While Apple doesn't necessarily know phones, they will most certainly align themselves with capable manufacturers such as Broadcom to produce the iPhone.
