When the iPhone was announced at MacWorld, Steve Jobs noted the price would be $499 for the 4GB iPhone and $599 for the 8GB iPhone. Cellphone companies normally offer rebates that result in substantial discounts off MSRP. According to Jobs, the iPhone would be sold at full price. The leaked images show Apple and Cingular testing price points. With any rumor, it's difficult to gauge the validity of the image. If authentic, Apple is testing price points of $299 (4GB) and $399 (8GB), a $200 difference.

The original images sprouted up on a startup website called AppleiPhoneReview and have since been removed. The images were so poorly done, that it almost lends to their credibility, as fakes usually look as if they come from Apple. Their removal could be due to pressure from either Apple or Cingular.
