AT&T plans to market the Apple iPhone to enterprise customers. The iPhone has been thought of as a consumer smartphone, but clearly AT&T believes it can penetrate the enterprise market.
The iPhone is expected to be released in late June and will retail for $499 for the 4GB version and $599 for the 8GB version. According to an unamed source at AT&T, the wireless carrier is working on their back-end enterprise billing and support systems. Analysts have panned the decision for a variety of reasons from lack of a removable battery to the inability to edit Office documents. If Apple is to make a serious run at enterprise customers, they must include support for corporate email and at a bare minimum offer support for reading Office documents including Word and Excel.
Other smartphone manufacturers including Palm, Motorola and RIM have discounted the iPhone as purely a consumer smartphone and claim the iPhone would not affect their market share.
