Apple Patent Hints at Flip iPhone

A recent patent application filed by Apple suggests that the company might be considering the development of an iPhone in a flip phone design.

Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean that you can expect a flip phone from Apple, but it is certainly possible if the company were to diversify their product line. A smaller iPhone nano has been rumored since the release of iPhone v.1. The patent references a "dual sided trackpad" allowing one translucent side to be used when it is either open or closed. You could theoretically control your iPhone without opening the clamshell. Opening the clamshell would allow you to make calls, no different than when using a standard flip phone.

Different form factors will always play on role in the decision making process when an individual is purchasing a phone. For many, the iPhone broke ground as it made smartphones "approachable". The lack of a QWERTY keyboard makes the iPhone less intimidating. It makes sense that Apple is looking at ways to gain more marketshare for the iPhone product line. Right now, there is only one option. Adding a smaller, clamshell based iPhone would certainly help expand the market for iPhones. As always, you can discuss future iPhones in our forums. Visit UnwiredView for a look at some interesting Photoshop concepts they have designed based upon the patent which has been uncoved.
