Apple Extends Exclusivity With AT&T

August 2, 2008

Those waiting for Apple to start selling the iPhone on other wireless carriers in the US other than AT&T will have to wait a bit longer. A report from USA Today has Apple and AT&T extending their exclusivity contract through 2009. Those waiting for Apple to start selling the iPhone on other wireless carriers in the US other than AT&T will have to wait a bit longer. A report from USA Today has Apple and AT&T extending their exclusivity contract through 2009. The subsidy which dropped the price of the iPhone 3G to $199 is said to have played a factor in the decision to extend the relationship.

The subsidy brings the cost of the iPhone 3G to a price point of $199 that has created incredible demand allowing Apple to sell the device in droves, with more than 1 million sold during the first weekend. With their tight iTunes integration, having more devices sold also helps Apple drive iTunes sales of music and applications in the incredibly popular iPhone Apps Store.

"We believe that over the long term, the subsidized iPhone 3G will drive increased sales volume and revenues among high-quality, data-centric customers," telecom analyst Tom Seitz of Lehman Bros. recently wrote in a note to investors.
