In addition to its announcement on revised Apple iPhone 3G S upgrade pricing for certain customers yesterday, AT&T also divulged that the new 3.0 firmware supports automatic authentication to provide seamless log-in for iPhone users to its Wi-Fi Hot Spots.

AT&T had announced free Wi-Fi access for iPhone users throughout its entire U.S. Hot Spot network last October. Connecting to a Hot Spot network required a multi-step process involving connecting to the Wi-Fi network and then requesting a link to be sent via SMS. The received link would then permit access to the Hot Spot.

According to AT&T’s press release, the new 3.0 firmware automatically authenticates and connects iPhone users to a Hot Spot as soon as the Wi-Fi network is selected. This connectivity feature is available immediately and requires no user intervention to activate.

AT&T boasts more than 20,000 Wi-Fi Hot Spots throughout the U.S., with free access to these Hot Spots available to all AT&T customers with qualifying iPhone data plans.
