At 11AM EST today, Apple and Newscorp are set to unveil The Daily, a new newspaper app just for the iPad, backed by Murdoch’s immense media empire. The folks at the New York Times haven’t been resting on their laurels, and are showing off their own iPad media application: News.me. It’s a collaboration between NYT and the folks behind bit.ly, the popular URL shortening service for Twitter.
The app is the polar opposite of The Daily — rather than a curated news experience crafted by full time writers, News.me pulls news articles off your friends Twitter and bit.ly streams — and lets you see news articles that are popping up in their Twitter streams. And it’s all shown inline in the app, rather than linking out into a browser.
It’s a very different approach than The Daily, and I have a hunch it might just do a bit better, because social news is incredibly hot right now.
