Ever since Apple announced the Retina Display on the iPhone 4, the world of cellphones has gotten ppi obsessed. Now, LG Display has announced a 5-inch screen that has a pixel density that is unheard off, significantly passing the Retina Display. This screen packs 440ppi into its 16:9 form factor for full 1080 resolution. Set to be available in the second half of this year, it could be heading out to huge smartphones before the holiday season. While Apple obviously isn’t going to be going to a 5-inch form factor, can you imagine what this thing would look like cropped back to the 4-inch form factor everyone’s been talking about? The iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S have a ppi of 326 — this squeezes more than 100 more pixels into each inch, pushing it past what the eye can see. That’d be somewhere in the neighborhood of 1550×850 pixels — which might be a bit of an awkward no-man’s land for video content, but would make images look really good.
You think Apple will have something to compete with this in the near future?
