A few months back we heard from iMore that Apple was planning on changing the ever present 30-pin dock connector to a new smaller connector, which would be part of the new iPhone 5. Four months later and TechCrunch has ‘confirmed’ that Apple will use a 19-pin connector on the new iPhone. This will no doubt send shockwaves through the world of iPhone accessory manufacturers, whose accessories may or may not work with an adapter. That’s assuming Apple provides some sort of 19-pin to 30-pin dock adapter to provide some level of compatibility between the iPhone 5 and older accessories.
At some point, it certainly makes sense for Apple to upgrade the dock connector. Just reducing the size of the connector allows room for other components within the device. There are alledged renderings from MobileFun that also show the supposed smaller dock. These renderings also show the ‘two-tone’ backplate and the widely rumored taller, iPhone.
Let’s just hope for a low-cost adapter and some possible added benefits such as improved syncing speeds. That would seem like a fair trade.

Does anyone sync via wire anymore? None of my devices come near a desktop/laptop for that purpose anymore (other than for SW updates or JB)
