Nest Labs today introduced the Nest Protect, a product they call a reinvention of the traditional smoke + carbon monoxide alarm. The new alarm can act as an extension of the Nest Thermostat or can be purchased as a stand alone product, priced at $129.00. Customers can choose between either a stand 120v wired version or a Nest Protect powered by 6 AAA batteries.
Nest Labs was founded by Tony Fadell, who made his mark as the Godfather of the iPod. The companies first product, the Nest Thermostat, is now widely available in major home retailers like Home Depot and Lowes. Estimates place shipments in the area of 1 million thermostats to date. The company has in many ways reinvented the thermostat hopes they can bring innovation to the smoke detector, a product that hasn’t seen much in the way of technological advances.
Where Nest Protect Provides Advantages
At its core, the product is a smoke + carbon monoxide detector. How it performs in your home is vastly different from the norm. Smoke detectors normally find themselves in hallways and bedrooms. The Nest Protect can be configured to serve as an LED night light. In bedrooms, turn off the lights and it will glow green to inform you that sensors and batteries are in proper working order. Raise your hand if you too have been woken in the middle of the night by a chirping alarm due to a low battery. If you opt for the 6 AAA battery option, the device will notify well in advance of needing replacement.
Notification comes via the Nest Labs app, available for both iOS and Android. The setup process allows the Nest Protect to connect and communicate with your WiFi network. For customers who own both the thermostat and smoke detector, the Protect will also serve to detect if you are home or away, providing this information to the Nest Thermostat, which can auto-switch to ‘Away’ mode.
The company seems to focus on pain points we’ve all experienced. One of the cooler features, is the ability to ‘hush’ an alarm by waving your hands. No longer do you have to fan smoke and open the windows in the dead of winter every time your cooking kicks up a bit of smoke.
In the event of a fire, the smoke alarm uses female alarms. If it detects rising CO levels, it will tell you in advance, providing an early warning. These alerts can also come in the form of notifications on your iPhone. For people with pets, this is an invaluable feature. Now you can be alerted of a potential safety concern if you are away from your home. These are features usually reserved for smoke detectors that are part of a more comprehensive and expensive alarm system.
The Nest Protect comes in white and black, priced at $129.00. It’s available for pre-order starting today at Nest, with shipments to begin sometime in November.
